As of October 2026, Venmo charges nothing to send money from your balance, bank account or debit card, but takes 3.00% when you pay with a credit card and 1.75% (minimum $0.25, maximum $25) on each instant transfer, according to Venmo's fee schedule. Standard transfers to a bank are free, and the main other charges fall on sellers, business profiles, check cashing and out of network ATM use.
Most people who use Venmo to split dinner or pay rent never see a fee. The charges start when you want money faster, pay with credit, sell something, or use the Venmo debit card in certain ways. Each section below names the fee, links the Venmo page that sets it, and explains when it applies.
Does Venmo charge a fee to send money?
Sending money to friends and family is free when the payment comes from your Venmo balance, a linked bank account or a debit card. The fee appears only when a credit card funds the payment or when the money goes to a PayPal account outside the United States. Receiving a personal payment is also free.
Venmo's fee schedule lists $0.00 for sending money to a Venmo or U.S. PayPal account using your balance, debit card or bank account, and a 3.00% fee when you use a credit card. On the same Venmo fee page, sending to an eligible non U.S. PayPal account costs 5.00%, with a $0.99 minimum and a $4.99 maximum, plus the 3.00% credit card fee if a credit card funds it.
A separate charge applies when the recipient receives a different currency: Venmo lists a 4.00% currency conversion spread, or a lower amount disclosed during the transaction, in its fees and currency conversion table.
What is the Venmo instant transfer fee?
The instant transfer fee is a percentage of each transfer, with a floor and a ceiling, deducted from the amount you move. It buys speed: instant transfers usually arrive within minutes, while standard transfers take one to three business days and cost nothing. The fee is shown before you confirm.
Venmo's instant bank transfer FAQ sets the fee at 1.75% per transfer, with a minimum of $0.25 and a maximum of $25, and says transfers typically arrive within 30 minutes. The fee schedule lists the standard option at $0.00, typically arriving in 1 to 3 business days to a bank or about 48 hours to an eligible debit card.
Worked through Venmo's published formula, a $100 instant transfer costs $1.75, a $10 transfer hits the $0.25 minimum, and any transfer above roughly $1,428.57 hits the $25 cap, per the rate on Venmo's FAQ. Instant transfers also count toward your weekly transfer limits; see Venmo limits for those caps.

What does Venmo charge for goods and services and business payments?
Seller fees apply whenever a payment is for a purchase rather than a personal transfer. On a personal profile, the seller pays a fee only when the buyer marks the payment as goods and services. Business and charity profiles pay a fee on payments received, with a different rate for Tap to Pay.
Per Venmo's fee schedule, a personal profile pays a 2.99% seller transaction fee on payments the sender identifies as for goods and services. Business profiles pay 1.9% + $0.10 per payment received, or 2.29% + $0.09 when the payment comes through Tap to Pay, according to that Venmo page. Charity profiles pay 1.9% + $0.10, per the same schedule.
The receiving side of a personal payment between friends stays free; Venmo notes on its fee page that a fee applies only when the sender identifies the transaction as for goods and services.
What fees come with the Venmo Debit Card?
The Venmo Mastercard debit card costs nothing to get or replace, and in network ATM withdrawals are free. Charges apply to ATMs outside the network, withdrawals abroad, cash taken over a bank counter with a signature, and cash added to your balance at a store. ATM owners may add their own fee.
Venmo's fee schedule lists $0.00 for withdrawals at MoneyPass ATMs in the U.S. and $2.50 for out of network or non U.S. ATM withdrawals. Over the counter cash withdrawals cost $3.00 per signature withdrawal, and adding cash at participating stores costs $3.74, per the same Venmo page.
Which transfer option should you pick?
Choosing between standard and instant comes down to whether the money is needed today and how large the transfer is. Because the instant fee has a cap, the percentage cost falls on large transfers, while small transfers pay a higher effective rate because of the minimum fee. Standard transfers cost nothing either way.
Need the money within the hour?
If your bank or card supports instant transfers, use instant and expect the fee to be deducted from the amount.
If it does not, the instant option will not appear; Venmo's instant transfer FAQ says your bank must enroll in an instant transfer service.
Can wait a few business days?
Use a standard transfer, which Venmo lists at $0.00 on its fee schedule.
Started a standard transfer and changed your mind? Venmo's standard transfers FAQ describes a one hour window to cancel or switch to instant.
Where Venmo's fee picture gets complicated
Venmo's fee schedule is short, but a few situations are easy to miss. The goods and services label, credit card funding and cross border payments each add a cost that the sender or recipient may not expect. Fees also change over time, so the live schedule always overrides any summary.
First, the 2.99% seller fee depends on how the sender labels the payment, so the person receiving money does not fully control whether a fee applies, per Venmo's schedule. Second, credit card funding stacks: a payment to a non U.S. PayPal account funded by credit card carries both the cross border fee and the 3.00% credit card fee, according to the same Venmo fee page. Third, the help center and the fee schedule describe instant transfer timing slightly differently, within 30 minutes versus "in minutes", so treat arrival time as typical rather than guaranteed.
