BEP20 is the token standard on BNB Smart Chain, the BNB Chain equivalent of Ethereum's ERC-20, and USDT BEP20 is the dollar stablecoin that runs on it under the contract labeled Binance-Peg BSC-USD on BscScan. Pick "BNB Smart Chain (BEP20)" as the network when you withdraw USDT from Binance, and the funds arrive at a 0x address on BSC with gas paid in BNB.
What is the BEP20 network?
"BEP20 network" is shorthand for BNB Smart Chain (BSC), the EVM-compatible chain formerly branded Binance Smart Chain. BEP20 itself is not a separate blockchain. It is the token interface (balance, transfer, approve) that every fungible token on BSC follows, the same way ERC-20 defines tokens on Ethereum. That is why BSC addresses use the same 0x format as Ethereum and why MetaMask works on BSC after you add chain ID 56.
What is USDT BEP20?
USDT BEP20 is the dollar stablecoin most wallets and exchanges label "USDT" on BNB Smart Chain. The token contract is named Binance-Peg BSC-USD, and BscScan showed a max total supply of about 9.18 billion BSC-USD on October 5, 2026 (BscScan token page).
One detail matters for anyone holding size: Tether does not issue this token directly. The Tether transparency page listed BNB Smart Chain at $0.00 net circulation as of its October 4, 2026 update, while Tron and Ethereum carry the bulk of Tether-issued USDT. The BSC version is a Binance-pegged token, so its redemption path runs through Binance rather than through Tether.
BEP20 vs TRC20 vs ERC20: which network does what?
The three most-used USDT networks differ in which gas token you need and what address format they accept. Getting either wrong is the main way transfers go missing.
Network | Gas paid in | Address format | Common use |
BNB Smart Chain (BEP20) | BNB | 0x... | Binance withdrawals, PancakeSwap |
Tron (TRC20) | TRX (energy and bandwidth) | T... | Exchange-to-exchange transfers |
Ethereum (ERC20) | ETH | 0x... | DeFi, large institutional transfers |
Live BNB Chain gas sits on the BscScan gas tracker, and Tether-issued supply per chain sits on the Tether transparency page.
Why BNB Chain matters for USDT
BNB Chain is the default USDT route for users who move funds through Binance. Withdrawing USDT from Binance to a self-custodial wallet commonly offers BEP20 as a network option, and PancakeSwap, the largest BNB Chain DEX, uses BSC-USD in many of its high-volume pools. For traders moving between Binance and onchain liquidity on BSC, BEP20 is the path with the fewest steps.
The cost gap matters at retail size. A small USDT transfer over Ethereum can cost a meaningful share of the principal when gas spikes, while the same transfer on BNB Chain costs a fraction of a cent, per the BscScan gas tracker.
How are USDT BEP20 gas fees paid?
USDT BEP20 transfers pay gas in BNB. On October 5, 2026, the BscScan gas tracker listed a standard gas price of 0.05 Gwei and an estimated cost of $0.003 for a BEP-20 token transfer, with a swap at $0.008. Those figures move with BNB price and network demand, so check the tracker before a large batch.
You must hold a small BNB balance to send USDT, the same pattern as ETH on Ethereum or TRX on Tron. Wallets cannot pay BSC gas in USDT unless the wallet adds a relayer or paymaster.
Which wallets support USDT BEP20?
Because BNB Smart Chain is EVM-compatible, most Ethereum-style wallets work after adding the BSC network. Common choices include:
MetaMask, the most-used EVM wallet. Add BNB Chain via the network switcher (chain ID 56) and import the USDT contract address.
Trust Wallet, a multi-chain self-custodial wallet with BNB Chain support built in.
Binance Wallet, the in-app wallet inside the Binance exchange plus the Binance Web3 wallet for self-custody.
OKX Wallet, a multi-chain self-custodial wallet with BNB Chain support and a built-in DEX aggregator.
Hardware wallets, Ledger and Trezor sign BNB Chain transactions through MetaMask or compatible interfaces, the safer setup for larger balances.
How to send USDT BEP20 from Binance to a wallet
Log into Binance, select USDT, choose Withdraw, paste the destination address, and pick BNB Smart Chain (BEP20) as the network. Binance sends the USDT to that address on BSC, and the receiving wallet shows the balance once the transaction confirms.
The destination must be a BNB Chain address. It shares the 0x format with Ethereum, which is where cross-network confusion starts. A Tron address starts with T and will be rejected. An exchange deposit address that only accepts ERC20 is the failure mode that loses funds, because the address string looks identical.
Common pitfalls when moving USDT BEP20
Network mismatch causes most lost transfers. Three patterns show up again and again:
BEP20 sent to a Tron address. Tron addresses start with T and BNB Chain addresses start with 0x. They are not interchangeable, and most wallets block the send.
BEP20 sent to an ERC20-only exchange deposit address. The address looks the same, but the exchange only watches Ethereum. Funds land at that address on BSC and never credit. Recovery depends on the exchange agreeing to sweep the address manually.
Sending without BNB for gas. A wallet holding only USDT BEP20 cannot move it until it also holds a little BNB. Buy BNB on an exchange or wallet on-ramp first.
The rule: read both the address and the network selector before signing. The network decides where the tokens land.
How does USDT BEP20 fit into onchain payments and DeFi?
BSC-USD is the main dollar stablecoin in BNB Chain DeFi. PancakeSwap pairs it with BNB, USDC, and most BSC-native tokens, and lending markets on BSC accept it as collateral. For paying a contractor, settling a small invoice, or moving funds between two of your own wallets, BEP20 fees are low enough that cost rarely changes the decision.
For cross-chain payments, USDT BEP20 is one endpoint of a route. Eco Routes settles stablecoin transfers across chains so the sender does not need to source BNB for gas first, which removes the "buy a little BNB" step for users arriving from another chain.
Methodology and sources
Gas figures come from the BscScan gas tracker on October 5, 2026. Token supply comes from the BSC-USD token page on the same date, and per-chain Tether issuance from the Tether transparency page (October 4, 2026 update). Verify current numbers before large transfers.
