What Is USDT ERC-20? Fees, Speed, How to Send (2026)

USDT ERC-20 is Tether on Ethereum. Contract address, live gas cost (about $0.02 per transfer in Oct 2026), confirmation times, wallets, and send steps.

USDT ERC-20 is Tether’s dollar stablecoin issued as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum mainnet, at contract address 0xdAC17F958D2ee523a2206206994597C13D831ec7 with 6 decimals, per Etherscan. In October 2026 a standard USDT transfer on Ethereum costs about two cents in gas, per Etherscan, because Ethereum gas has stayed near record lows.

What is USDT ERC-20?

USDT ERC-20 is the version of Tether that lives on Ethereum. "ERC-20" names the token standard, not a separate coin: it is the same dollar-pegged USDT, recorded on the Ethereum ledger instead of Tron, Solana, or another chain. You send it to an Ethereum address that starts with 0x, and you pay gas in ETH.

The ERC-20 interface (transfer, balanceOf, approve, allowance) is defined in EIP-20. The USDT contract on Ethereum shows a max total supply of 88,303,053,982 USDT and 15,330,182 holders as of October 6, 2026, per Etherscan. The contract includes a Tether-controlled blacklist function, so flagged addresses can have balances frozen.

Is USDT ERC-20 the same as USDT on other networks?

It is the same asset with the same issuer, but each network has its own token contract and its own ledger. USDT on Ethereum cannot be received at a Tron address, and USDT on Tron cannot be received at an Ethereum address without a bridge or exchange in between. The network you pick decides fees and speed.

Ethereum addresses also work on BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, and other EVM networks because they share the 0x format, which is why picking the wrong network at withdrawal is the most common mistake. For the Tron side, see TRC-20 vs ERC-20.

How much are USDT ERC-20 gas fees right now?

Gas is priced by computation, not by the dollar amount moved, so a small USDT transfer and a very large one cost the same. At current Ethereum gas prices a USDT transfer costs a few cents or less. The cost rises only when network demand pushes the gas price up, which you can check before sending.

On October 6, 2026, the Ethereum gas tracker showed a standard gas price of 0.117 gwei, ETH at $2,694.23, and a USDT transfer gas limit of 54,128, putting a USDT transfer at about $0.017, per Etherscan. Its historical chart for September 5 to October 5, 2026 stayed under 1.5 gwei, per Etherscan.

Exchange withdrawals are different: the exchange sets its own flat ERC-20 withdrawal fee, which is often higher than the onchain gas. Check the withdrawal screen, and compare with the live gas cost on Etherscan.

How fast does a USDT ERC-20 transfer confirm?

A USDT transfer usually lands in the next Ethereum block after you submit it, within seconds. Exchanges wait for extra confirmations before crediting a deposit, so an exchange credit takes longer than the onchain transfer itself. Wallet-to-wallet transfers show up as soon as the block is included.

Ethereum divides time into 12-second slots, per Ethereum Foundation. Kraken credits USDT on Ethereum after 30 confirmations, which it estimates at 6 minutes, per Kraken.

How does USDT ERC-20 compare with TRC-20?

In 2026 the old rule that Tron is the cheap network no longer holds for ordinary transfers. Ethereum gas has fallen so far that a USDT transfer on Ethereum now costs less than a TRX-burn transfer on Tron. Tron still matters for exchange and remittance liquidity, while Ethereum keeps the deepest DeFi markets.

Which wallets support USDT ERC-20?

Any wallet that supports Ethereum mainnet can hold USDT ERC-20, because it is a standard token contract. The differences are usability: whether USDT shows up automatically, how clearly the wallet shows the gas fee, and whether it warns you when the destination network does not match. MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Rabby, Ledger, and Trezor all support it.

If USDT does not appear automatically, add it manually with the contract address 0xdAC17F958D2ee523a2206206994597C13D831ec7 and 6 decimals, both shown on Etherscan.

How to send USDT ERC-20 step by step

You need a small amount of ETH in the sending wallet to pay gas, because USDT cannot pay for its own transfer. The recipient needs only an Ethereum address. The flow is the same in MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Rabby, and most other wallets, and takes a minute once the wallet is funded.

  1. Confirm the address. ERC-20 addresses start with 0x followed by 40 hex characters. An address starting with T is a Tron address.

  2. Hold some ETH for gas. At current gas prices a small amount of ETH covers many transfers.

  3. Select USDT on Ethereum. Make sure the network reads Ethereum or Mainnet, not BNB Chain, Polygon, or Arbitrum.

  4. Paste and verify the address. Check the first and last characters, since clipboard malware can swap addresses.

  5. Review the fee, then sign. Paste the transaction hash into Etherscan to watch it confirm.

What mistakes lose USDT ERC-20 for good?

The costly mistakes are network mismatches and malicious approvals. Sending Ethereum USDT to an exchange deposit address set up for BNB Chain or another EVM network can strand the funds. Signing an unlimited USDT approval on a phishing site lets an attacker drain the balance later. Both are avoidable with a few checks.

Review and revoke old token approvals with Revoke. USDT on Ethereum also requires setting an allowance to zero before setting a new nonzero one, which is why some apps ask for two signatures.

How to move USDT ERC-20 to another chain

To get USDT from Ethereum onto Tron, Solana, or an Ethereum layer 2, you either withdraw through an exchange that supports both networks, use a bridge, or use an intent-based router that delivers on the destination chain. Each option adds its own fee and timing on top of Ethereum gas.

Eco Routes is one intent-based option: you sign once on the source chain and solvers deliver the stablecoin on the destination chain, so you do not need to hold gas on the destination side.
